National Bowling Girls' Double Team
- Michelle Kwang Tien Mei
- Valerie Teo Hui Ying
The 12th Asian Youth Championship, held in Hong Kong in 2004, is an
event Michelle Kwang and Valerie Teo, the National Girls' Doubles
Team, will remember for the rest of their lives.
They had begun the second block of the doubles event in ninth position,
trailing the leaders by more than 250 pins. What followed was a
dramatic comeback worthy of a page in Singapore's bowling annals.
With consistently good play, the bowlers closed in game by game,
reaching the 12th and final game with only 55 pins behind the leaders.
Valerie then rolled a perfect 300 game, and the team clinched the
gold medal with a spectacular 42-pin margin.
Valerie says, "Michelle and I trained, lived, played together
for two weeks before the competition and bonded as a team. We were
able to draw strength from each other."
Other than their exceptional play, Michelle and Valerie will remember
the 12th Asian Youth Championship for one other reason. For their
stunning performance, they have been named the Junior Team of the
Year (Event).
"We are thrilled to receive the Award. It is testimony that
we work well together," says Michelle.
Adds Mrs Jessie Phua, President, Singapore Bowling Federation:
"The Award definitely augurs well for the Singapore Bowling
Federation's focus on youth development. Valerie and Michelle are
incredible role models not just for young bowlers, but also for
all young athletes in Singapore. They have shown tremendous commitment
to the sport." |
