Olympic Memories

Athens 2004
Stanley Tan was the first Singaporean sailor to qualify for the Olympic Games. He donned Singapore’s colours at two Olympiads—Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004. By Athens, he had been sailing full-time for five years in his pursuit of sailing excellence.

Tokyo 1964, Mexico City 1968
C. Kunalan had the thrill of competing at two Olympic Games, although not for the same country. He had only started running the year before 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. Mexico City was a struggle with jet lag, the climate and the sharp difference in altitude.

Melbourne 1956
Dr. Tan Eng Liang remembers the honour of being a young water polo player representing Singapore at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne , Australia. He describes the Olympic Games as the “crowning achievement of my whole sporting career.” A long-time vice president of the SNOC, Dr. Tan recently returned to Melbourne as Chef de Mission for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
