Elite athletes know the importance of the Sport Game Plan to help them achieve sporting excellence. In May 2010, 21 athletes also learnt about establishing their Career Game Plan in an exciting, fulfilling and useful session led by expert Career Facilitators.
On 22 May 2010, SSC collaborated with the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), International Olympic Council (IOC) and Adecco Personnel Pte Ltd. (Adecco is one of the world’s leading manpower staffing company) to organise the second session of the very popular IOC Athlete Career Program Job Preparation Workshop. Patrick Glennon, Global Director of the programme led the 4-hour Workshop. He was assisted by a team of facilitators from Adecco Personnel Pte Ltd.
James Wong, an 8-time SEA Games Gold medalist for Discus and Chairman of the SNOC Athlete's Commission introduced the session in his punchy, engaging style. He urged the captive audience to seize the opportunity to start preparing for life after sport early in their sporting career. He shared how it could enhance performance and help them stay in sport longer.
After an energizing icebreaker, the session started with the athletes doing a self-awareness exercise which comprised 3 areas – (1) what they do best, (2) what they like to do and (3) their priorities in life. Through TalentSort™ Cards, they identified their inherent values, natural interests and inclinations. The findings were relevant and useful in as it helped them reflect on possible future careers or take stock of their present careers.
This section culminated in the athletes reflecting on their future goals and, writing out their vision statement and action plans to achieve their goals.
Next, Patrick facilitated an exercise to help athletes identify some of the much coveted transferable skills that they could port over to their work careers successfully. Many participants felt that the session served as an eye opener for them.
Patrick saved the best for last – the session ended with a pulsating networking skills exercise which saw the athletes mingling excitedly to exchange name cards with each other.
When the session ended, all athletes gave a rousing cheer and warm applause. Many of those present were clearly motivated to move into action.
