If winning a title is difficult, defending a title is even harder. However, the National Women’s table tennis players won the team gold medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March 2006, repeating their team victory in Manchester in 2002. Masterful and thorough, the team dominated the women’s events at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games.

For their consistency and professionalism at the Commonwealth Games, the National Ladies Team is the deserving recipient of the 2007 Award for Team of the Year (Event). But there are other reasons to celebrate our stars in women’s table tennis.

With a mix of established and new players, the National Women’s team also won a silver medal at the Asian Games in Doha, beating Hong Kong and North Korea for the silver medal. Earlier in the year, the team also won a gold medal at the 5th Southeast Table Tennis Championships.

The team in 2006 consisted of Li Jiawei, Sun Bei Bei, Zhang Xueling, Tan Paey Fern, Sim Kai Xin Zena and Tan Yan Zhen. Their consistent success as a team speaks well of the depth and breadth of women’s table tennis in Singapore. The sport remains one of our strongest medal hopes for Beijing 2008.
